Paralympian silver medalist to get an honorary doctorate from Nitk

Mangaluru: Nitk Maykal will provide an honorary doctorate on alumnus, Bureaucrat Suhas L Yathiraj, who won the Silver Medal in the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics Game.
He will be awarded the title during the 19th Annual Virtual Meeting of the Institute scheduled for Saturday.
K Umaheshwar Rao, Director, Nitk, said that Dharmendra Pradhan, Minister of Education Union, will be the guest chief and K Sivan, chairman, ISR, will be a guest of honor.
Rao said that this was the first time in the 60-year history of the institution, that the honorary title had been given.
The Senate has agreed that it is based on the extraordinary achievement of Alumnus Suhas L Yathiraj.
He was a btech in computer science from a 2004 batch.
He pocketed a silver medal at The Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games, at the Singles Badminton SL4 men’s.
He was the Deputy Commissioner of Gautam Buddha Nagar at Uttar Pradesh.
A total of 1,681 candidates will pass on this connection, which includes 120 PhD, 766 Postgraduate and 795 BTECH students.
Rao added that even though the pandemic, Nitk continued to complete its academic activities on schedule, through resources and integrated information systems (Iris), the MIS platform developed at home using open source software by the faculty and staff.
During 2020-21, more than 92% of undergraduate students and 55% of postgraduate students have been placed in a leading organization through campus placements.
When reopening the campus completely, Rao said that currently undergraduate and postgraduate students have arrived on campus.
The campus will open in phase, and will be fully reopened in December, he said.
