Mysuru: More than 80,000 of 2.13 households not connected to the water supply system, MySuru City Corporation (MCC) has decided to install new water meters in all these households to integrate everything in a water supply network.
MCC has allocated Rs 4 Crore in its budget to install all meters.
Until now, there were 1,78,000 households in the MCC jurisdiction that had water meters installed, around 70% of them paid their water bills regularly.
However, the survey conducted recently found that more water was supplied illegally to more than 23,000 houses.
With a rapidly growing city since the last survey held, the Civic Agency has decided to conduct a new survey to identify whether water is supplied through illegal facilities for more households.
MCC estimates that more than 60,000 households in the area under their jurisdiction are illegally supplied.
Against RS 6 to 7 crore targets, MCC has only collected Rs 5 Crore through Cess Air.
From the household mounted water meter, MCC collects the nominal amount of Rs 160 per month.
Over the years, arrears in terms of water that are not paid from houses and commercial buildings have surged to Rs 186 Crore.
Sources at MCC said that the government department owed the body of the Kitil RS 50 Crore.
The recurring reminder of the Kitil body to the government department and private companies has been ratified, forcing MCC to produce a new plan to regulate all illegal connections by installing water meters, funding the initiative from his pocket.
The MCC has decided to buy this meter at a cost of Rs 3,200, while the tender will drift and the offer is invited from a private institution to install meters.
“MCC will collect an additional RS 100 in bills for installation every month,” said the source.
Commissioner MCC Laxmikanth Reddy told the Toi that the process had already taken place.
“The company has been ordered to install meters in the first phase of the project.
MCC will complete the tender within a week, and start soon after,” he said.
Reddy said that instructions have been published to the Water Council officials and zon officers to see complaints of dysfunctional water meters without delay.
The project to install water meters in more than two lakh households throughout Mysuru was approved by the MCC Board, said the former Mayor and Coroporator Arif Hussein.
“The budget allocation has been made, and officials must start working on the earliest projects because this project will help generate revenue,” Hussein Toi said.
