Lisbon: Portugal on Tuesday recommends that children aged 12 to 15 years vaccinated against Covid-19, ideally before the start of the academic year, because the Delta variant has caused a wave of cases in this country.
About 400,000 young men included in the age group will get one of two vaccines authorized for adolescents by European Union drug regulators, Pfizer-Bionontech and Modera, said DGS Health Authority.
“Vaccines will be available to adolescents accompanied by parents or legal guardians without the need for a doctor’s prescription,” Head of Health Authority, Graca Freitas, said at a press conference.
He added data in the EU and the US has shown an increased risk of rare side effects such as myocarditis and pericarditis for 15 million teenagers who get vaccine photos.
Portugal enhances vaccination as a new wave of Covid-19 Hit Portugal case early last month to a level that was not visible since February when the country experienced tight locking to overcome what the worst Koronavirus surge in the world.
Daily death and hospitalization remain far below the February level, with new cases especially reported among younger and unavusted people who tend to fall sick.
Portugal reported 2,232 cases and 17 deaths in the last 24 hours, brought a total of 990,293 cases and 17,502 death since the pandemic began.
At the end of last month, the country announced a three-stage plan to lift the Covid-19 limit, including canceling hours of night time and lifting limits at the opening hours of restaurants and shops.
