Mumbai: A 30-year-old man who chased and arrested a thief who escaped with his handbag from the Virar train station on Wednesday night stabbed to death by the thief.
Local residents who joined the victim in chasing the defendant, arrested him and surrendered to the police.
Pradip Tripathi (35) has made theft on the train.
Harshal Vaidya and his wife who were pregnant Priyanka went to Global City in Virar on Tuesday to attend Puja at the home of Priyanka’s sister.
His mother-in-law Prabhavati Mancame (60) joined them on Wednesday.
Harshal and Priyanka recently celebrated their first wedding anniversary.
The crime place in a Viretarfter dinner, the three reached the Virar station at around 11pm to return to their annoying parle house.
They were waiting for the train on platform 4, when a man came from behind and grabbed the bag held by Harshal, said Vitthal Chowgule Inspector.
Harshal, the cashier at a restaurant in Mumbai, chased him, with Priyanka and Mancame followed.
When Harshal chased the defendant, he warned people who pass by raising the alarm.
Immediately, several men joined Harshal when the defendant ran towards the deserted track, opposite to the station.
Harshal held Tripathi, who took out the knife and stabbed him repeatedly on his chest and stomach.
Tripathi tried to escape but was arrested by locals.
Harshal, which was soaked in blood, was treated at the nearest Sanjeevani Hospital and then moved to Shatabdi Hospital in Kandivli, where he died early on Thursday.
The police received a rough CCTV footage from the incident from the crime.
The pictures show Tripathi, in a white shirt and trousers, escaped with a bag, even when he was chased by the locals.
The knife recovered from him.
Police said Tripathi had pick-pickening cases against it.
He was ordered under the IPC 302 section (murder) and 392 (robbery), and had been returned to police custody by the Vasai court.
Police said CCTV footage from the Virar station was obtained and the autopsy report was awaited.
The body was handed over to Priyanka and his mother on Thursday afternoon.
Eyewitnesses told the police accused, even though Bulky, run at least km before being arrested by Harshal.
They told the police that the victim and they did not expect the defendant to issue a knife.
