Thiruvananthapuram: Unrelenting rain that has hit the district for the past week may have rested, reducing intensity, but they must leave the eternal impact on various sustainable projects from the Ministry of Public Works (PWD) in the Capital City.
According to PWD authorities in the district, around 20 road work projects, both majors and minor, have stopped without limits due to rain.
The reason quoted by the Department Authority for this problem is the absence of windows to dry the raw materials used in road surface work.
According to the PWD Regency authorities, the affected projects are where the surface work is waiting.
The road surface is done using a mixture of destroyed stones and bitumen.
Crushed rocks must be dried correctly so that the mixture will be strong.
Or the other, the bitumen bond will be given weak and will be abolished during heavy rains.
“Even though the rain continually has stopped, we still receive intermittent rain and this prevents dry raw materials,” said Executive Engineer PWD (Thiruvananthapuram Division) R Jyothi.
He added that only if it rained for at least five days continuously, would they get enough time to dry the raw material and restart the surface work.
One of the main works that has been affected is the work of Pappanamcode – Malayinkezhu.
Although the majority of work is completed here, surface work cannot be completed because of the rain often.
Another affected project is the 11th MS MS job in Neyattinkara (Nabard), 85% of them have been completed.
The project deadline is set to end on November 30.
If the weather remains unprofitable, the department must extend the contract period.
Similar is the case attingal – puthenpalam – venjaramoodu 27 kilometers stretch.
The work has finished more than 17 kilometers of the road.
The executive engineer said that Shangumugham’s repair work – the airport road was not affected, and was underway.
This is because the work done there today does not involve the surface.
This is related to the construction of a 300 meter long diaphragm wall there.
They have installed a stack sheet covering 210 meters in this case so far and the sand is being filled into it.
