Navi Mumbai: A young naturalist and researcher from Kharghar, Tarang Sarin, has documented 45 species of butterflies inside and around Kharghar Locality.
Of these, four species ‘protected’.
Speaking with Toi, Sarin said: “Kharghar blessed has so many species of butterflies on wetlands, plains and hills.
Of the 45 species that I observe in Kharghar, four are protected species based on schedule 2 wildlife laws (protection) , 1972.
It is Plain Sahyadri Puffin, Sahyadri Blue Oakleaf, Blue Gram and Danaid Eggfly.
The former two found only in the Sahyadri region while the other two were found in various parts of the country.
“He added that the presence of butterflies showed a healthy environment.
“They are part of the food chain.

Butterflies are part of the ecosystem.
So, the presence of rare butterflies shows that a place like Kharghar is valuable for biodiversity.

Some common varieties found here include general yellow grass, limestone blue, palmfly, common castor, plain tigers and general and other Mormons.
