Sarhad Dairy for ‘milk’ salt pances in Kutch

Rajkot: After successfully reducing the desert ship, Sarhad Dairy is ready to exploit other other treasures – salt pan from Rann Kutch.
Uni Milk wants to start selling Kutch salts along with milk.
Uni Dairy will begin research to see the feasibility of selling Salt Kutch under the name of the Amul brand after the feasibility study at Kutp and Surendranagar District District which counts for 76% of the total Indian salt production.
The total Gujarat salt production is at 2.20 crore tons per year.
“We reflect on this salt idea.
We want to buy salt, process it and sell it.
We will appoint consultants to find out if this idea is feasible and based on the report, I will place a proposal on the GCMMF board for marketing,” said Chairman Sarhad Dairy Valamji Humbal, who Also vice chairman of the Gujarat Federation of Cooperative Milk Marketing (GCMMF) which markets the Amul brand.
Uni Dairy, who is a GCMMF member, wants to form a cooperative salt community in the lines of village levels of public milk that forms the spine of the vast Gujarat milk sector.
“If it materializes, it can also help agariya (salty workers) produce more like our milk producers.
We want to get an estimated investment in the machine and land purchase and if all studies show that this project is feasible, we will start the project,” he said.
Simultaneously, Uni Milk also wants to diversify in the production of juice.
In October 2020, he had appointed a consultant to submit a report about producing fruit juice and marketing it with the Amul brand name.
Dairy plans to make the Mango, Pomegranate and Juice Date.
“For fruit juice, we have several meetings with GCMMF but because of the covid-19 induced pandemic, the project cannot take off.
We try to remove the intermediary wherever possible to increase farmer income.
The juice project must now take off,” he said.
