Colombo: Navy Sri Lanka has arrested 43 Indian fishermen and won six trawles for allegedly conducting illegal hunting in the country’s territorial waters, a official statement said on Sunday.
The navy arrested fishermen in the southeast sea of Delft Island in Jaffna on Saturday.
“The special operations carried out by the Navy in the Southeast Sea from Delft Island, Jaffna on the night of December 18, 2021, caused a seizure of 6 Indian fisheries trawlers in the waters of Sri Lanka, with 43 Indian fishermen,” Navy said in a statement.
The arrest made by a rapid attack craft from the Fast Fast Attack Flotilla, 4 FAF (4 FAF) installed on the North Navy Command, he said, adding that the operation was carried out while holding on the Covid-19 protocol.
The settings were made to hand them to the relevant authority for legal action after conducting a quick antigen test from the captured Indian fishermen, he said.
Fishermen from both countries are often arrested because they accidentally enter their waters.
The fisherman’s problem has become a big irritation in bilateral bonds.
