Canterbury / UK: A protein that can contribute critically to severe forms of Covid-19 recently identified by the Biosciences School of Kent University and the Institute of Medical Virology in Goethe-University.
This study entitled ‘The potential role of the CD47-sirpalpha axis in the Covid-19 pathogenesis has been published by the scientific journal of the current issues in molecular biology.
SARS-COV-2 is Coronavirus which causes Covid-19.
While many individuals only develop symptoms that are light or not at all in SARS-COV-2 infection, others experience severe and life-threatening diseases.
Researchers have found that cell infections with SARS-COV-2 result in increased protein levels called CD47 on the surface of the cell.
The CD47 is called “Don’t eat me” signal to the defense of the immune system that protects the cells destroyed.
CD47 which is virus induced on infected cell surface is likely to protect them from the introduction of the immune system, enabling the production of a large number of viruses, resulting in a more severe disease.
Famous risk factors for severe Covid-19 such as older age and diabetes are associated with a higher CD47 level.
The high CD47 level also contributes to high blood pressure, which is a big risk factor for Covid-19 complications such as heart attacks, strokes, and kidney disease.
Data shows that the high CD47 level caused by times and viruses contribute to severe Covid-19 by preventing effective immune responses and increasing networks related to disease and organ damage.
Because therapy targeting CD47 in development, this invention can lead to enhanced Covid-19 therapy.
