WASHINGTON: Director of the Federal Investigation Bureau (FBI) Christopher Wray on Tuesday warned that the Taliban takeover in Afghanistan could inspire US-based extremists to plan attacks on American land.
Wray testifying in front of the Senate Homeland Security Committee and the domestic government affairs committee has skyrocketed since the spring of 2020, of about 1,000 investigations that may be 2,700 and extremist groups have never stopped planning attacks on US land, reporting hills.
“We are worried that, with developments in Afghanistan, among others, there will be more inspiration for the first bucket,” Wray told the Committee.
“So I think we anticipate, unfortunately, the growth of both categories as we look forward over the next few years,” added alert.
Even the Director of the National Contraterial of Christine Abizaid also testified to the committee that the threat of terrorism against the country was less “acute” than the past two decades after the takeover of the Afghan Taliban, reported the hill.
Abizaid also said that US officials had monitored how the group of Al Qaeda Terror and Islamic State (ISIS) could rebuild their forces and carry out attacks on the US.
“After our withdrawal, the question is, at what point that the regional threat builds the ability and the purpose that is focused externally and is primarily focused on the country?” Abizaid said.
“I will say from the perspective of the intelligence community, that is one of our highest priorities, only to monitor and assess the extent to which these groups truly present external threats,” Abizaid added.
Afghanistan plunged into the crisis last month after Kabul fell to the Taliban and the government who was democratically elected at the time – President of Ashraf Ghani collapsed.
