Kolkata: Some stretches cross the Salt Lake plunged into darkness after sunset because many good street lights don’t work or not bright enough to burn on the streets.
Residents say there are several arteries in blocks that are constantly dark because of the inadequate or dim street lights.
“Some street lights inside and around this area have stopped working for a long time.
In some places, the lights are very dim so that they do not present their goals,” said the CE block population.
On some stretches such as Cross Road from the Anindita bus stop to Laboni and near Laboni Island on the road to the FD block, road lights have been damaged for several days.
Across the city, non-functional tricula lights still can still be seen in the median world because they have not been removed.
The elderly residents said they felt unsafe out of their home to walk around the night alone because of the dim street lights.
“The street lights are not too bright in some places.
I don’t feel safe to get out of my house after sunset,” said Septuagenarian Krishna Chakraborty, a resident of block it.
Residents say even though the condition of the street lights has increased in the city, there is a scope for further improvement.
“Some stretches, especially the canal side road, need to have the right lighting,” said Tamal, a resident of Hb Block.
Bidnagar officials Municipal Corporation (BMC) said they did an examination and when they received a dysfunctional street light complaint to repair or replace it.
“Some street lights do not work on the stretch in the CE block because there is an error in the underground cable line.
This problem has been brought to our notification and will be repaired in a few days,” said a citizenship official.
Citizenship officials say they have worked to replace all old sodium steam lights in the city with LEDs in phases and that the large area in the city has been borne.
BMC previously received RS 17 crore approval by the state government to switch to LEDs.
Officials said there were around 25,000 sodium steam lights across the salt lake and adjacent areas were replaced with LED lights.
BMC pays a monthly energy bill around Rs 1.5 Crore.
“About 60% of the electricity bill will decrease after all LED lights are installed,” said a BMC official.
In the adjacent new city, NKDA, which has installed LED lights on the main arterial road, has worked to replace all the old sodium and metal street lights on the path in and cross roads with LEDs.
