Mumbai: Senior citizens contributed 84% of Covid-19 Mumbai’s death in January so far, made a proportion of deaths that were much higher than during the second wave.
But the third wave driven by Omicron has claimed fewer lives (159), much lower than the top of the second wave.
According to BMC data, of the 159 deaths, 134 people above 60 years, 20 (13%) are between 40 and 60, and five (around 3%) are below 40.
The numbers indicate that up to 86% have one or more underlying health conditions; Many are also not vaccinated or some are vaccinated.
In comparison, during the second wave in April-May last year, the proportion of senior citizens who surrendered to Covid each dropped to 65% and 60%.
“Virulence was seen in the second wave now losing people between 40-60 years has increased to 30% in April and 32.5% in May.
Death has increased even in the age group under 40 years, where the death rate of the case touches 5% and 7% in two months.
“The virulence was seen in the second wave clearly disappeared in the third wave, and it was reflected in the mortality rate,” said Dr.
Raja Walinjkar, who headed the Covid-19 unit in Sevenhills Hospital.
In the second wave, it is believed to be driven by tensions Delta, younger people die despite being treated with proper drugs.
“No Covid-19 patient who experienced the storm of the cytokine this time which was usually seen in the second wave,” added Dr.
Walinjkar.
The third wave began around December 21 and peaked on January 7 with 20,971 cases.
Given the fact that there is a pause a few weeks between cases and death, the city starts recording death every day in two digits Since January 11.
The curve was much steeper during the second wave of last year.
After reporting 391 deaths in March, death soared to 2,727 in April and 1,858 in May.
The doctor believes that if the incidental covid section is taken from Covid death, the amount can be lower in the third wave.
Dr.
Arpita Ddiedy, the head of critical treatment at Hiranandani Hospital, said that they had recorded six deaths, but all of them were among the elderly patients with the underlying conditions.
Among them was an 84-year-old woman who came with myocardial infarction and coincidentally tested positive for Covid.
Other deceased has very high bilirubin levels and malignancy, but he is also positively tested for Covid-19.
“If you ask me how many people die because of pure covid complications in my ICU, I will say there is nothing in this wave,” said Dr.
Dwidy.
However, it does not mean that there are no serious covid patients with bad lungs in the ICU.
“About 25% of ICU patients seriously with pure covid complications and high HRCT scores 20/25.
The good news is they recover even though they take longer,” said Dr.
Didiedy, added that the cases were delta or omicron could not be said with certain.
Dr.
Shashank Joshi, a member of the state government assignment unit in Covid-19, also said that senior citizens need to remain vigilant even if Covid triggers mild symptoms.
“Those who are not vaccinated, some vaccinated or very immunocompromised must continue to remain very careful,” added Dr.
Joshi.
