Brussels: The European Commission has set aside three million euros ($ 3.5 million) in urgent funding for aid groups to assist the victims of the 7.2 magnitudo earthquake that hit Haiti on weekends.
“The European Union quickly mobilizes support for this very fragile country, where the storm and heavy rain worsens the terrible situation even more,” the EU Commissioner for crisis management, Janez Lenarcic, said in a statement.
EU executives emphasize money will “address the most urgent need” such as medical assistance for overwhelmed hospitals, as well as water, residence and sanitation for the most vulnerable.
The Haitian crisis was exacerbated by damage due to the insecurity of the pandemic and chronic Covid-19, the statement noted.
The massive earthquake struck west of the Port-au-Prince capital on Saturday, killing more than 1,400 people and flattened thousands of buildings.
Poor Caribbean countries are now at risk of flooding and landslides as storms, a gift of tropical depression, bored on it on Tuesday.
Haiti had not fully recovered from the 2010 Great Earthquake which was destroyed by the port-au-prince, and the country was still staggering from the murder of his president last month.
