MILAN: UNESCO World Heritage Committee arguing on Thursday whether to appoint Venice and the Laguna environment as a threatened world heritage site due to the effects of over-tourism together with poor population and governance.
The Italian government moved this month to avoid the appointment, divert a large-scale ship from the historic center to the industrial port which is still in the Venetian lagoon.
Parts of the ship through the Giudecca canal, which returns after a long pandemic break, quoted as the main reason for placing risky Venetian status.
The recommendation was made by the World Heritage Center in June, with the aim of warning the international community with the urgency of the Venetian situation.
The center director, Mechtild Roessler, told AP that the appointment was not proposed lightly.
The aim is to blend international responses to help sites in danger and resolve problems, he said.
The decision can come later on Thursday.
However, such appointment is widely seen as a reprimand for local management of the World Heritage Site, the status that recognizes universal value for humanity.
The consortium of the conservation group has urged the World Heritage Committee, to meet in China, to put Venice on the list of hazards “without delay” so that the city of historic channels and the contemplation can get the attention of “very need sites.” The signatory is that we are here Venice, citizens for air, the World of Wildlife Fund Venice, Italian National Trust and the Italian Bird Protection League.
“The last attempt by the national government to show it is seriously trying to overcome encouraging main challenges but still far from total changes in the approach needed to manage sites effectively,” Jane Da Mosto, our Executive Director, here Venice.
He said his group And other people are “ready to contribute to the reformity of the radical re-required and try to get Venice back on the list immediately,” noting that Venice has the potential to be an example for other sites.
But he said the public, the private sector and civil society need to work better together.
