NEW YORK: The United Nations welcomed the dialogue between Russian President Vladimir Putin and US leader Joe Biden on security and strategic issues, a PBB Partner spokesman Florencia Soto Nino to Sputnik.
On Thursday, the two presidents held a telephone call to discuss increased tensions over Ukraine and upcoming talks about this issue.
“We always welcome dialogue between member countries,” said Soto Nino when asked about telephone calls.
Tensions between Russia and Ukraine increased in the last few weeks in the midst of the alleged buildup of Russian forces on the border of Ukraine and the preparation claims for invasion.
Moscow has repeatedly denied the allegations, saying that Russia has the right to move troops in its area with its own discretion, while NATO military activities near the Russian border pose a threat to security.
On December 17, Russia released a proposal on security guarantees to NATO and the United States who strive to prevent further expansion of the Alliance to the east and prohibit the spread of missiles between the middle and Russian range within the reach of their respective regions, among others.
Negotiations in security guarantees between Moscow and Washington were scheduled for January 10, followed by the Russian-NATO council meeting to discuss the issue on January 12, and the Russian Summit and organizations for security and cooperation in Europe the following day.
