Taipei: The US urges China on Sunday to stop the “provocative military” activities near Taiwan, after the island ruffled the jet to warn far from 100 Chinese military aircraft entering the air defense zone for three days.
Taiwan, a democratically ruled island claimed by China, has complained of more than a year of repeated missions nearby by the Chinese Air Force, often in the southwestern part of the air defense zone close to the Taiwan-controlled pratise islands.
On Friday, Saturday and again on Sunday, the Taiwanese defense ministry reported that the Chinese Air Force had sent aircraft to the zone, with 39 on Saturdays, the highest number reported to date.
“The US is very worried by the provocative military activities of the Chinese People’s Republic near Taiwan, which is unstable, calculation errors, and damaging the regional peace and stability,” said the Foreign Ministry spokesman Ned.
The US has an interest in living in peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait, and will continue to help Taiwan in maintaining “sufficient self-defense abilities,” he said.
Taiwan’s foreign ministry said China increased tensions in the Indo-Pacific region.
China has not commented on its activities, and it is not clear what might cause Beijing to decide to install a mission, even though Friday is the country’s national day, a patriotic vacation that marks the establishment of the People’s Republic.
Previously said the flight was to protect the country’s sovereignty and aimed at “collusion” between Taiwan and the US.
