Los Llanos de Aridane: Spain, on Monday ordered more than 30,000 people to stay inside La Palma Island for several hours due to toxic gases from volcanoes that have erupted for months.
After a few days of low-level activity, Cumbre Viejo suddenly appeared to live on Sunday with several explosions that sent extensive ash clouds and smoked to the sky.
The Canary Islands government, which lay on the northwest coast of Africa, on Monday morning ordered residents from three cities to lock because of high sulfur dioxide levels in the air.
But shortly after 2pm (1400 GMT) it lifted the order because of “improving air quality”.
The three cities are home to around 33,000 people, or 38 percent of the island population, according to the Ine National Statistics Institute.
The local government tells residents to close the window and the door and close it with the tape to prevent the air from entering outside.
“Limit yourself, if possible, in the rooms located inside,” he added in a statement.
More than 7,000 people have been evacuated from their homes since the volcano erupted on September 19, spewing hot red lava rivers that slowly crawled towards the sea.
No one died from the eruption, but more than 2,800 buildings have been destroyed, according to the coopernicus u monitoring service.
This is the longest eruption of La Palma and the third in a century, with the previous one in 1949 and 1971.
