Kolkata: The city is set to have a new waste disposal site, with Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) starting a project to take the burden of Dhapa, which has taken the whole burden of city solid waste for decades.
The corporation has identified a piece of land to establish “scientific” landfill near Joka, which will fulfill the waste produced in South Kolkata.
This will not only reduce the burden on Dhapa, but it will also lead to a more sustainable way to deal with 4,500 tons of daily impurities.
A plot, measuring around 35 hectares in Rashunjaja near the Joka, arranged to be acquired by the Urban Development Department and then developed with assistance from the West Bengal Control Board to form a sanitary landfill with adequate precautions to ensure that “Lindi.” Has been dissolving harmful dangerous substances that can enter the environment) do not seep into groundwater.
Also, the provisions will be made to prevent methane trapping on the ground and cause fire, problems in Dhapa for years.
Sources in the KMC City Dense Waste Management Department said that the civil body had sent a scientific landfill proposal in Rashapunjuna to the Urban Development Department and called for initial surrender so that working on the preparation of landfill could begin.
When this TPA site is ready, waste produced in most South Kolkata, especially additional areas such as Behala, Reach Park, Tollygunge and Jadavpur, will be transported to this site instead of being transported to Dhapa in Kolkata Timur.
Dhapa himself is undergoing a big makeover, with the KMC starting the reclamation project where 60 hectares will be converted into a sanitary landfill.
This area will be carved from Dumping Dhapa which is by bio-mining waste that has been thrown away there to restore other non-biodegradable metals and waste.
According to sources, private companies have been involved for ambitious reclamation work.
Overall, 40 lakh tons of waste will be moved in the phase.
“First, 9 lakh tons of waste will be removed, followed by 14 lakh tons and then 17 lakh tons,” said an official.
Biodegradable waste will be converted into fertilizer.
Restored plastic waste will be converted into furniture formed.
Two plants have been arranged in Dhapa for this purpose.
“At the end of the reclamation process, we will change the entire area to the Sanitary TPA site for the disposal of scientific waste,” said a KMC solid waste management department official.
The RS 260-Crore project has been taken after order from the National Green Tribunal.
However, before the completion of the project, the KMC wants to make a segregation of waste at mandatory sources for households.
“We will ensure the separation of waste in all 144 wards in phase.
We cannot let the waste mix to achieve Dhapa or Rashunja so makeover is finished.
We may need to force punishment to those who do not comply with the segregation government,” the official said.
