Mumbai: Back after a two-year gap because Covid, Trophy Ranji, which will be held in two phases, will begin on February 10 and conclude on June 26, Secretary BCCI Jay Shah communicates with all state associations in e-mail (TOI has a copy) Detailing the tournament format, on Thursday.
Registering highlights from the 2020-21 edition of Trophy Ranji, Shah told that a total of 38 teams will display in the tournament in nine places.
The league stage will be held before the IPL from February 10 to March 15, and will have 57 matches.
The knockout stage will be held posted the IPL, and will have seven matches from 30 May to June 26.
The team has been divided into nine groups (eight elites and one plate).
Each elite group will have four teams, while the plate group will have six teams.
In the league stage, each team will play three matches.
The elite team will play each other, while the plate team will play against three teams from their group.
One team from each elite group will qualify for the quarter-finals (except one).
The lowest qualified team of eight elite groups will play the top ranking team from the plate group in the pre-quarter-finals.
Overall, the tournament will have 64 matches played in 62 days.
Places for the elite group match are Chennai, Trivandrum, Cuttack, Delhi, Haryana, Ahmedabad, Guwahati and Rajkot, while the venue for the match group is Kolkata.
Mumbai has been placed with defending champions Saurashtra, Odisha and Goa in the elite group D-whose matches will be played at Ahmedabad.
Everyday equipment, match play conditions, health and safety guidelines and guidelines for staging associations from the 2021-22 edition of the trophy Ranji will soon be shared, Shah wrote.
