Mangaluru: Increased demand for Udupi Sari in the past three years has led students from the Institute of Fashion Designers throughout India to reach Kadike’s trust, to understand and document the design of udupi sari.
In 2018, Mamama Rai and her husband BC Shetty took the resurrection project of Udupi Sari by launching Kadike Trust on the Talipady Weavers Society (TWS) in Kinnigoli.
At present, 70 weavers are employed in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi and in TWS the number of weavers increases to 35 out of eight.
Udupi Sari, a brand that enjoys the GI tag, carries the name of the weaver and simple innovation in natural coloring, contemporary design and connective, assistance in adding value to Saris.
Mamatha Rai said, “We have had several students from all of India who want to learn and understand the work of revival.
At present, around 36 fifth semester students from the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT), Bengaluru, as part of their craft research and documentation , introduced to Udupi Sari and its resurrection work.
“Belief has had students from the institution, including the Institute of Social Sciences Tata, Hyderabad, School Design and Fashion Technology, University of Amity, Mumbai, Kerala State Institute of Design, National Institute of Design, Haryana, Manipal , and Nift Chennai.
VisvesVaraya Center Trade Promotion, Nodal Agency for Tagged GI products in Karnataka, has provided a project called ‘Diagnostic Study and Future Intervention Udupi Saree Weaving’ to Mamama Rai and study reports have been submitted.
Weavers Training, Kadike Trust has decided to celebrate the National Handloom day with Nabard and TW on August 8 8.
Sanjeeva Shettigar, Weaver 80 counts, will be given the ‘Nekara Ratna’ and Venkatesha Shettigar award, a very skilled 80-count, other Weaver will be respected , The ‘Uttama Nekara’ award will also be awarded Kutti Shettigar and Laxmi Shettigar.
Pre-Loom Artisan Damodar Shettigar will also be respected.
Meanwhile, 18 female weavers and male training participants in coloring will run on the completion of their six-month skills development training program at Udupi Sari Weaving.
