UE promises € 1 billion for Afghanistan

Rome: EU warns that humanitarian assistance for Afghans will not be enough to keep hunger when winter approaches after the block announces a support package of 3 billion euros ($ 1.15 billion) on Tuesday.
Block 27 countries make an appointment during the Virtual G20 peak dedicated to Afghanistan.
The Italian government, which holds the G20 presidency, said the purpose of the meeting was to overcome “urgent” humanitarian support for Afghanistan, the struggle against terrorism and freedom of movement for Afghans in the country and out.
The UE support package, which covers 300 million euros ($ 346 million) that has been done before, will be targeted at the Afghanistan population and neighboring countries, which is the first to provide immediate assistance.
Outside of such humanitarian assistance, EU’s development assistance to the country remains frozen.
The EU remains cautious not to legitimize the Taliban regime.
“But Afghans should not pay the price of Taliban’s actions,” said the European Commission President Ursula Von Der Leyen.
