Detroit: Hyundai and Kia told the owners of nearly 485,000 vehicles in the US to park them outside because they could burn even when they stopped.
Withdrawal of two Korean car makers is one more in a series of long heat and the problem of engine failure that has teased the company over the past six years.
This time the problem is contamination in the anttilock brake control module that can cause short electricity.
Affected is certain KIA Sportage SUVs starting 2014 to 2016, and 2016 to 2018 Sedan 2018 K900.
Given Hyunda includes 2016 to 2018 Santa Fe SUVs, 2017 and 2018 Santa Fe Sports, Santa Fe XL and 2014 and 2015 Tucson SUV.
Car makers said they had 11 fire reports in the US but there was no injury.
The document posted Tuesday by US safety regulators said the owner must park the vehicle outside and far from the structure to repairs made.
Dealers will replace the fuse.
In addition, the Hyundai dealer will check the control module and replace it if needed.
Hyundai owners will be notified starting April 5.
Kia expects letters starting from March 31.
Withdrawal after the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration increases a series of investigations into combustion of engine compartments that have disturbed Korean car makers.
In December, the agency consolidated two investigations from 2017 to a new new engineering analysis covering more than 3 million vehicles starting in 2011 to 2016 vintage.
At that time, NHTSA had received 161 complaints of engine fires, some of them occurred in vehicles that had been recalled.
The first withdrawal of companies related to engine failure and fires reached the entire road back to September 2015.
Since then published at least eight remember for a number of machine problems, according to the NHTSA document.
The agency said it was opening technical analysis to evaluate whether the previous withdrawal included enough vehicles.
It will also monitor the effectiveness of previous withdrawals “and the long-term continuity of related programs and non-safety field actions carried out by Hyundai and Kia.” At that time Hyundai and Kia said they were working with agency.
In a separate statement, the car maker said they had done a lot of withdrawals to overcome machine problems, including remembrance, new engine monitoring technology and providing expanded guarantees.
The fire vehicle that was investigated involved Korean car makers related to ‘Theta II GDI, Theta II MPI, Theta II MPI Hybrid, NU GDI and GDI Gamma Machine.
The models discussed include Sonata Hyundai, Santa Fe, and Elantra and and Kia’s Sorento, Rio, Optima and Soul.
The year model included in 2011 to 2016.
In November 2020, NHTSA announced that KIA and Hyundai had to pay a fine of $ 137 million and for safety repairs because they moved too slowly to remember more than 1 million vehicles with machines that could fail.
Fines completed the previous probe into the behavior of companies involving the withdrawal of several models originating from the model in 2011.
Kia paid $ 27 million and invested in the safety measures of $ 16 million.
Other $ 27 million payments will be suspended as long as KIA fulfills the safety conditions, said NHTSA.
KIA denied US allegations but said they wanted to avoid a prolonged legal battle.
Data collected by a non-profit center for automatic safety shows more than 30 US fires and related machinery from Hyundai and KIA since 2015.
Withdrawal of more than 20 models of models 2006 to 2021 with a total of more than 8.4 million vehicles.
Many of the withdrawals involve manufacturing defects that stop oil flow through engine blocks.
Many involve expensive machine replacement.
Hyundai and Kia also conducted a US “product improvement campaign” which included 3.7 million vehicles to install software that would remind the driver of the possibility of engine failure.
