VADODARA: Strange as it might seem, but a girl in Panchmahal district, attended standard 11 and 12 classes despite failing in Class 10.
She did not sneak into classrooms, but was formally granted admission and the error came to light only recently.
The girl Asha Rathwa used to study in a school in Arad in Halol district till Class 10.
After this, she sought admission to the state government’s Model School in Halol in Class 11.
She was granted admission and went on to study till Class 12.
But the school, as well as the girl, were left stunned when the form for Class 12 board exams were being filled.
The system did not accept her form and showed that she had not cleared Class 10 exams.
Panchmahal district education officer B S Panchal said that it transpired that the girl had failed in four subjects.
Her marksheet also clearly mentions that she needed improvement, implying she had not cleared Class 10 exams.
“It seems that the school where she studied Class 10 did not tell this to her while handing over the marksheet,” said Panchal.
He said that a notice has been issued to the school and it has been asked to clarify the goof up.
“Such isolated incidents do take place elsewhere in the state,” said Panchal.
He, however, said that it was surprising that the girl did not notice this.
According to Panchal, marksheet adds up the marks of the exams conducted by the board as well as internal exams conducted at the school.
He said that it was necessary for the student to pass in both the exams.
“Even if their total adds up to passing marks but the student has failed in one of them, the student is not promoted,” added Panchal.
In Asha’s case too, the total of the board and internal exams adds up to passing marks but she failed to get the passing score of 23 marks in four subjects in her board exams.
Asha’s father Bhala Rathwa said that they came to know about the issue when the forms were being filled.
“Her two years were wasted due to the goof up.
She could have attempted the Class 10 exams again if we have come to know this two years ago,” he said.
