Qualcomm Inc.
said that it believed it would supply only 20% of the modem chip to connect the Apple iPhone wireless data network by the launch of 2023 devices.
Qualcomm currently supplies modem chip for all Apple devices.
Qualcomm said at the investor conference that it believed that telephone chip income would develop in line with a wider telephone market even though Apple found 80% of modem chips from other suppliers.
Apple works on its own modem chip and bought the Intel Corp.
modem unit.
Qualcomm doesn’t say whether it believes Apple will supply all parts that Qualcomm hopes to lose or whether it can switch to other vendors.
Qualcomm Financial Officer Akash Palkhiwala said the company expects Apple to only raise the percentage of “low digits” from the sale of the company’s chip at the end of fiscal 2024.
Qualcomm chip income reaches $ 27 billion this year, $ 10 billion of them comes from sources other than smartphone handsets.
The company believes that, excluding Apple sales, its income growth in the handset will grow faster than the overall market, especially mainly on traction with top-class smartphone makers such as Xiaomi Corp, Oppo and Vivo.
“We are no longer determined by a single market and single customer relationship,” said Chief Executive Cristiano Amon during the event.
Amon also said that Qualcomm sells Apple what is called a fronth-end fron-frequency chip paired with modem chips.
Ammon said Qualcomm would have a future opportunity to compete to sell the chips to the apple regardless of where Apple contributed the modem chip.
But he said that the potential of victory was not included in Qualcomm’s estimate.
