Bormes-les-Mimosas: Wildfire near the French Riviera has killed one person and remains out of control when blazing through the forest Wednesday, according to the local authorities.
The French newspaper Var-Matin identified the victims of the fire as a man who was found dead at his house in Grimaud City.
At least 27 people, including five firefighters, have suffered inhalation of smoke or a mild injury from Blaze, Var Region’s prefecture says in a statement.
More than 7,000 people were evacuated from home and camp have slept in a temporary shelter, according to the prefecture.
More than 1,100 firefighters, water disposal and helicopters were being deployed on Wednesday to fight, which started Monday night about 40 kilometers (24 miles) from the Saint-Tropez beach resort.
Driven by a strong seasonal wind coming from the Mediterranean Sea, the fire included 7,000 hectares (17,300 hectares) of forests on Wednesday morning, the prefecture said.
French President Emmanuel Macron, who has been on vacation in the nearest coastal fortress, visited the fire zone on Tuesday.
He praised firefighters because they could “stabilize” fire.
Local authorities close the road, block access to the forest and be careful.
Officials warn that the risk of fire will remain very high until Wednesday due to hot and dry weather.
The temperature has reached 40 degrees Celsius (104 F) in the last few days.
Forest fires have swept the Mediterranean region in recent weeks, leaving areas in Greece, Turkey, Italy, Algeria and Spain in burning ruins.
