Thiruvananthapuram: a group of 20 women who worked hard for 1,071 days Man-Day had managed to dig a pool in Thururhy Ward in Throatticode Panchayat here.
This is one of the biggest works done as part of the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGA) in this district.
Pools spread over 40 cents 50 meters long soil, 30 meters wide and a 6 foot depth.
Geotextile has also been used to cover the pond ground wall.
The work was finished as part of the ongoing Panchayat scheme to make a pool in a private plot especially for fish farming.
About 184 pools have been made in Panchayat as part of the project.
This pool has the capacity to accommodate 5,000 to 6,000 fish and is made according to the guidelines of the Department of Fisheries and Irrigation.
The first harvest can be done after eight months.
All steps have been taken to ensure complete success of agriculture.
Birds have been stored in the bay through the use of nets and tarps.
The budget is estimated at around 5 lakh.
“This is the biggest pool ever built as part of Mgnrega in the district.
By encouraging and creating ponds for fish farming, we hope to increase fish farming and become independent in fish production,” said V J Suresh, President Panchayat.
The idea of making ponds obeyed by Nidhin M who owns the ground.
Following the inauguration, carp varieties, including Katla, Rohu, and Tilapia released into the water.
Agricultural benefits can be taken by land owners.
