Guwahati: The construction of the Second Medical College of Guwahati will begin on January 1 next year, Minister of Himanta’s minister Buswa Sarma said here on Sunday.
This medical college will be established on the Mahendra Mohan Choudhury Hospital site at Panbazar.
New colleges will be formed by Amalgamating MMCH and Lokapriya Gopinath Bordoli’s chest hospital in Kahilipara here in the city with an estimated cost of more than Rs 800 Crore.
News Minister Union Amit Shah in December last year has placed the foundation stone from this new medical college, which will be the second after Gautati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), which began in 1960.
Sarma said that the service at Mahendra Mohan Choudhury Hospital will be closed from January 1, 2022 to facilitate the construction of new medical colleges.
He said that patients at MMCH would shift to Fru Pandu and hospitals in Dhirenpara and will be run by GMCH.
“Doctors MMCH will be able to provide services to patients at Pandu Fru and Dhirenpara Hospital,” he added.
