Sydney: Alex Carey will be Australia’s captain in the international first day against West Indies, Cricket Australia announced Tuesday, after Aaron Finch was ruled out through injury.
Finch worsened his right knee injury for the last twenty years last week against West Indies and Cricket Australia said his availability for the second and third ODIS would be assessed every day.
The three matches are being played in Barbados, starting on Wednesday.
Carey, 29, will be the 26th ODI Captain of Australia and took the coat in the absence of regular deputy captain Pat Cummins, who was sitting on a West Indies tour along with a number of senior players including Steve Smith and David Warner.
“I am very honored to be able to lead the team while Aaron recovered,” said Carey, who had previously attended Australia A, striker Adelaide and South Australia.
“To Captain Australia is one of the greatest privileges in sports and an honor.
I am very grateful to accept.
Frechy is our captain and we will welcome him back with open arms when he is fully fit, so for now I can fill.

“Australia lost the twenty -20 series to West Indies 4-1 and with several missing stars, Carey would lead an inexperienced ODI team where Josh Philippe, Ben McDermott and Riley Meredith were in the mixture to make their debut.
Carey’s leadership potential was recognized at an early age, even though it was not in cricket.
A talented Australian Junior soccer player, he is the first official captain of the latest Australian football team, The Greater Western Sydney Giants, although when they are only part of Victoria’s U-18 competition.
When he was told that he had been cut from the squad due to lack of speed, he shifted his focus to cricket and within two years has made his debut for South Australia.
The left hander has been the mainstay of the Australian Odi team since his debut against England in 2018 and was seen as a strong competitor to take over the gloves from the Paine team when the test guard retired.
