Chikkamagaluru: The villagers of Echaluhole brought a 72-year-old woman who was sick on their shoulders for 4 km before shifting it to a private vehicle to be taken to a hospital in Kalasa in Chikkamagaluru district on Tuesday because the streets were damaged.
Echaluhole and Kalakoda are hamlets in Kalasa Wildlife Sanctuary with 20 houses.
These traditional forest residents do not want to move outside the forest area.
The distance between Echaluhole and Kalasa is about 50 km.
People travel at least 20 km in the sanctuary to go to any city.
Hamlet is connected to the closest cities with the mud road left damaged by recent rain.
Laxmi, suffering from agerelated diseases, fell ill on Tuesday at his home in Echaluhole.
His grandson Mahesh told the neighbors to help him shift to the hospital.
With a damaged road for 4 km, the villagers took him to their shoulders to the motorized area where he was taken to the Kalasa Hospital in a private vehicle.
With the video of the Viral, people blame the government and administrative districts because of their failure to provide basic facilities.
The villagers said the Ministry of Forestry opposed the construction of roads within the protected area.
Deputy Commissioner Chikkamagaluru Kn Ramesh told Tii that he had instructed the officers to see the demand for villagers for a decent road.
He said it “looked like” the Ministry of Forestry had not given permission to repair the road.
“We will overcome this problem using funds from the national rural labor insurance program.”
