Literacy program for prison inmates begins

Dharwad: The central prison in Dharwad has launched a literacy program with support from the Directorate of Mass Education.
There are more than 97 prisoners who nest in prison who are illiterate.
To empower them with education, a basic literacy drive has begun.
Sushma Gdbole, director of the Directorate of Massa Education, on Friday inaugurated the program and asked the inmates to become educational empowerment.
“With the aim of increasing the literacy rate in this country and also helps illiteracy to read and write, the government has launched several programs.
Literacy class will be involved in two batches and everyone who wants to read and write can attend class,” he said.
New from language, they will also be taught to solve simple arithmetic problems.
The prisoners must show sharp interest in literacy programs and became independent after walking out of the barracks, Sushma said.
Superintendent M Marigigudar said 10 of the 97 illiterate inmates had registered voluntarily, while others later.
