Warsaw: Poland said on Friday a Belarusian soldier tried to fire flares to Polish border forces and others tried to knock down the fence along the border amid rising tensions over migrant waves that tried to reach the European Union region of Belarus.
Warsaw and the European Union accused Belarus to spur illegal migrants to enter Poland and other EU countries through the Belarusian region to put pressure on blocks for sanctions imposed by Minsk for human rights violations.
Belarus has repeatedly denied this.
“Further provocation on the border.
Yesterday, a Belarusian soldier tried to fire a flare weapon towards the Polish army.
Fortunately, the gun did not shoot,” wrote the Polish Defense Ministry on Twitter.
“100 meters, five armed Belarusians tried to destroy our fence (border), shouting at the same time that they would shoot the Polish army.” Poland has established a barbed wire fence along the border, where emergencies apply, to prevent migrants who arrive and plan to build 5.5 meter walls (18 feet) along 180 km (110- miles) stretch boundaries.
Anton Bychkovsky, a spokesman for the Border Guard Committee of the Belarusian state, told the news agency Sputnik Belarus that Poland created facts.
“Side side continues to improve the situation around the situation on the border.
Representatives from the Polish Defense Ministry actually provoked themselves,” Sputnik said like saying it.
Belarusian Foreign Ministry did not immediately respond to a comment request.
