Doha: The Taliban held their first face-to-face talks with the UE-US delegation together Tuesday in Qatar when the Muslimist was a hard line pursuing diplomatic boost for their international support.
Afghan’s new ruler sought recognition, and assistance to avoid humanitarian disasters, after they returned to power in August after withdrawal of US troops after 20 years of war.
The head of the United Nations Antonio Guterres urged the world to contribute to Afghanistan to lead economic collapse, but also slam the “broken” promise of Taliban to Afghan women and girls.
Direct talks in Doha are facilitated by Qatar which has long been accommodating the Taliban political office.
EU spokesman Nabila Massrali said the meeting would “enable US and European parties to overcome problems” including free parts for people who want to go, access humanitarian assistance, respect women’s rights and prevent Afghanistan be a paradise for “terrorist” groups .
“This is an informal exchange on a technical level.
It is not a recognition of the ‘temporary government’,” he said.
Taliban desperately need help because the Afghan economy is in a ditch condition with international assistance cut off, food prices increase and unemployment of spiking.
The regime, still not recognized as a legitimate government by other countries, also faces security threats from the Islamic-Khorasan group (IS-K), which has launched a series of deadly attacks.
“We want a positive relationship with the whole world,” said Taliban Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi at the previous event in Qatar.
“We believe in balanced international relations.
We believe that balanced relationships can save Afghanistan from instability,” said Muttaqi, who led the Taliban delegation on Saturday for direct talks with American officials since the withdrawal of America.
Ahead of the conversation on Tuesday, UE Foreign Policy Head Josep Borrell said the block would want to increase his direct assistance to the Afghans in an effort to prevent “collapse”.
“We can’t ‘wait and see’ we need to act, and act quickly,” Borrell said after discussing with the ministers of the UE development.
The international community faces difficult balancing actions to immediately need assistance to Afghans without supporting the Taliban government.
The G20 leaders to hold a virtual summit on Tuesday to discuss humanitarian and security situations after the Taliban takeover.
It is not clear whether all leaders of the G20 economic power, which includes the United States, EU, China, Turkey, Russia and Saudi Arabia, among others, will join meetings organized by Italy.
But an Italian government official said “Most heads of state and government”.
Guterres underlined the dissatisfaction with the Taliban for his treatment of women even though he swore it would not repeat the rules of the previous hardline.
“I am very worried about seeing promises made for women and women of Afghanistan by the broken Taliban,” he told reporters Monday.
Afghan children were allowed to return to secondary school three weeks ago, but girls have been told to stay at home together with women teachers in most countries, even though they can attend elementary school.
Asked about the exception of a daughter, Muttaqi said the school was closed because of Covid-19 – the threat he said had diminished.
“Covid …
has been controlled and very few incidents, and with that risk reduction, the opening of the school has begun and every day is increasing,” he said.
Muttaqi also insisted there was no discrimination against the Shia community and claimed that the IS-K was under tamed.
“Whatever preparation they have made is neutralized 98 percent,” he said.
Is-k claims the bombing of the Shiite Mosque which killed more than 60 people on Friday, the most deadly attack since the US withdrawal.
Underwalking the traultural security situation, the US and England warned their residents on Monday to avoid hotels in Afghanistan.
Spain was arranging the second evacuation flight for Afghanistan on Tuesday after flying 84 from Pakistan to the base near Madrid on Monday.
Madrid evacuated more than 2,000 people, most of them Afghans who had worked for Spain and their families, during western withdrawal from Kabul in August but flights had to stop so the last American troops left.
