JORHAT: A 35-year-old woman was raped by two persons at a daily market in Jorhat town on Monday night.
Both the accused have been arrested.
The survivor, rescued in a naked condition, is under treatment at Jorhat Medical College and Hospital (JMCH).
The arrested persons have been identified as Nagen Saikia (45) and Saurabh Jyoti Kalita (28).
Both of them are rickshaw pullers.
Jorhat SP Ankur Jain said, “We have arrested the accused.
The inner garments, some cash and one cap has been seized from the spot.
The woman has identified the accused and our investigation is on.” “The accused have been booked under Section 376 of IPC (punishment for rape) and have been produced before the court today (Tuesday),” added Jorhat police station OC Pranjit Lahkar.
The incident took place at Amar Bazzar located in the town’s Tarajan area, about 1 km from Jorhat Sadar police station.
Police said the woman, who was working in a restaurant at Baruah Chariali, was on her way back home from her work when the duo committed the crime.
Several organisations, including All Assam Students’ Union (AASU), staged a dharna in front of Jorhat deputy commissioner’s office demanding exemplary punishment to the guilty.
