Bengaluru: The autorickshaw driver demands exorbitant tariffs and refuses to ply may be common in the city, but the vehicle you pay down to ride maybe it’s illegal.
According to the Department of Transportation, there are around 35,000 illegal autorickshaw plying on the streets of the city.
VK Moosa, Regional Transportation Officer (Autorickshaws), Shantinagar, said, “We issued an authorickshaw permit 1.35 lakh in Bengaluru so far, but only 1 lakh plying with the right documents and fitness certificates.” He said even if the authorities utilized all illegal authoric, there was no place to park them.
“Traffic police face space crafts on their station, so they don’t take any action.
We also have severe lack of staff for law enforcement,” he said.
He said FCS autorickshaws must be updated every two years.
“But 35,000 permit holders are not advanced to renew them.
They may be plying without insurance too,” Moosa said.
C Sampath, Secretary General, Union Adarsh Auto Drivers, admitted that there were several illegal autorickshaws in the city.
“The main reason for some drivers refuses to abolish to some locations is that they may not have permission / insurance / FC.
The Department of Transportation together with traffic police, legal metrology department, and insurance companies must conduct special camps to regulate illegal autos.

Meanwhile, the department proposal to introduce Aadhaar-based electronic permits for auto is collecting dust.
Many investors allegedly have many permits with different names.
