Bengaluru: Although there are concerns over the third Covid-19 wave, the presence at BBMP schools has increased significantly with almost 76% of students in class 8 to 10 and 60% in grade 6 and 7 appear for classes on campus.
Pandemic has greatly affected the education system with schools closed for almost two years.
Children not only skip academics, but also friendship and games with friends and classmates.
With fresh Covid cases fall, the government, after many deliberations, let the school reopen gradually.
The BBMP school, which mostly serves children from the economically weaker parts, has shown a way when students are interested in the class present.
The data accessed by TOI shows 808 students registered in grade 6 and 7, 60% have attended the oncampus class.
And from 6,590 students in class 8 to 10, slightly below 76% back in the classroom.
“Schools in Byraveshwara Nagar and Herohalli have more than 600 students in class 8 to 10 on their rolls and more than 55% of students attend classes,” said Shankar Reddy, Director of Education (BBMP).
“Because most students come from poor families, they have no other way for online classes, and prefer regular classes.” A principal from the BBMP school said: “We don’t expect a good response, but we are more than happy, and the presence increases every day.” The principal said besides learning, children were interested in catching up with friends too.
In Junior High School in Padarayanapura, after the Covid Hotspot, 362 out of a total of 457 students in class 8 to 10 have appeared for lessons in the classroom.
“Considering the first outbreak is in Padarayanapura, we wonder if parents will send their children.
But the worries are unfounded,” said a senior BBMP (education) officer.
A similar pattern is noted in grade 6 and 7 in Marutimandira Ward.
“Bangsar Marutimandira is a detention zone for the longest time during the second wave.
So, we don’t expect many students to appear.
But we are wrong,” said a BBMP elementary school teacher in the ward.
BBMP now convinced parents from these children to get vaccinations.
“We have directed the principal and principal to check the status of vaccinations of parents.
If they have not received it, we will include them to make sure their children do not contract the virus,” Reddy said.
