Silchar: BSF on Monday takes a large consignment of overseas cigarettes, worth Rs 1.7 Crore, from Lakhipur locality from the Cachar Assam district near Manipur’s border.
Four people were arrested in this connection.
43 Cigarettes are confiscated when they are loaded into van pick-up from the boat anchored on the banks of the Barak river.
Acting on a tip-off, the BSF team rushed to the place and saw personnel, the men who moved in containing cigarettes trying to escape.
However, BSF personnel managed to arrest four people, including two Chhattisgarh residents, and confiscated 43 cartons.
BSF then combed the area, said a senior BSF official.
“Police restored 43 cartons, each containing 1,000 packages of cigarettes, while other cartons have 900 packages.
There are 43,900 gold flake cigarette packages made in Turkey.
Each package costs RS 390.
The total consignment value is Rs 1,71.21,000,” BSF said in a statement.
One pick-up van and three cellphones were also confiscated during operation.
The people who were arrested were identified as Arshad Hussain from Singerband Village in Cachar District, Firoz Khan from the Locity of Jaipur-King Bazar in Cachar, Vivek Kashyav from Bhanpuri Village at Chhattisgarh Locity and Sahu Suresh Kumar from Durga Nagar Village Baru in Raipur Chhattisgarh.
BSF submitted FIR at the Lakhipur police station and kept items confiscated at the police station.
