GUWAHATI: Just a week after the doctor assault incident at a Covid care centre in Assam’s Hojai district, another incident of assault has come to light after an FIR was lodged by a doctor in Darrang district on the north bank of the Brahmaputra.
Ahmed Ali, a doctor of Tezpur Medical College and Hospital, lodged the FIR against youth Congress worker Rahul Amin with the police alleging assault.
Officer in-charge of Kharupetia police station Abhijjit Kakati told TOI that the incident took place at a private clinic at Nimtoli in Kharupetia.
“As per information, the accused took his mother to the clinic to consult the doctor about some illness of the latter.
There were several patients at the clinic at the time of the incident.
When they had to wait for a long time at the clinic, they had allegedly assaulted the doctor,” the OC said.
A case under sections various sections of the IPC has been registered against the accused.
“Sections of Disaster Management Act and Assam Medicare Service Persons and Medicare Service Institutions (Prevention of Violence and Damage to property) Act under which others have not been enforced as the incident took place at a private clinic and the doctor was not on government duty.
Moreover, sections of Prevention of Damage to Public Property Act (PDPP) were not enforced as the accused did not indulge in any vandalism at the clinic,” the OC said.
However, the accused is now on the run.
“We are trying to catch him,” he added.
A similar incident happened at Hailakandi in the Barak valley few days back where a government doctor on duty at the S K Roy Civil Hospital in the district was allegedly assaulted.
Police arrested two persons, including a woman, on Friday.
Hailakandi SP Ramandeep Kaur said the arrested woman tested Covid-19 positive and was admitted to the Covid ward of the hospital.
On June 1, Dr Seuj Senapati and few other medical staff were brutally assaulted by a mob of around 30 people after death of a Covid-19 patient at the Udali Covid Care Centre in Hojai district.
Later, police arrested 28 people in connection with the case.
Senapati is currently undergoing treatment at the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH).
