MUMBAI: Maharashtra minister, Jayant Patil on Saturday stated,”that the Karnataka government has decided to install real-time information acquisition method (RTDAS) in its own Almatti and Narayanpur dams to track the water level, that may assist in preventing recurrence of this flooding scenario that Kolhapur and Sangli districts of Maharashtra confronted in 2019.” Patil, the state Water Resources minister, stated this after conducting a high-level assembly together with Karnataka chief minister, B Yediyurappa and its own residence minister, Basavaraj Bommai in Bengaluru to solve the water-related problems involving the two neighboring countries.
Unprecedented rain had wreak havoc throughout the 2019 monsoon year in western Maharashtra, notably in Kolhapur and Sangli districts, asserting over 60 lives.
Following the flooding, it had been alleged that the Karnataka government had been accountable to it since it didn’t discharge water in the Almatti dam over the Krishna river and its backwater resulted in flooding from the Maharashtra districts.
Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Patil said,”Maharashtra currently has a real time information acquisition strategy within Krishna river basin, which assists the officers gauge the speed of water level increase because of rains.
It will help them take conclusions, such as the discharge of water in dams, to prevent flooding” “Today, it’s been decided to install similar systems in Almatti dam and Narayanpur dam (Basava Sagar) for improved understanding between officials in the the nations,” he explained.
The RTDAS was set up in Maharashtra with the World Bank financing.
The machine began working around six-seven decades ago, wherein automatic rain gauge offers precipitation information in real time to the water resources section together with the increasing water levels and in-flow to a dam.
“We will need to manage Almatti dam water level and increase at the river water level.
When it’s dynamically tracked and handled, we’ll have the ability to conquer the flooding scenario,” Patil said.
The system, once installed in Karnataka’s Almatti and Narayanpur dams, can help the officers of the countries overcome the chance of flooding.
If Maharashtra must discharge water from the dams as a preventative step, it is going to notify the Karnataka officials who’d consequently lower their own water amount in Almatti and Narayanpur dams.
This alleged lack of communicating from 2019 had led to Maharashtra releasing lakhs of cusecs water beds which encompassed the villages around the banks.
Afterwards, Karnataka had to release similar quantity of water all these dams, which had resulted havoc there too.
Krishna river appears in Satara district and escapes via Sangli and Kolhapur prior to entering Karnataka.
Even the Almatti dam in Karnataka was a bone of contention as overdue release of water in the dam is reportedly supporting the flood at Kolhapur and Sangli districts in 2019 and in 2005, which not merely maintained several animal and human lives, but also triggered large-scale reduction to the agriculture industry.
Patil’s meeting with all the Karnataka CM along with ministers had been aimed at enhancing coordination between both countries over flood administration.
This past year, a delegation from Karnataka had seen Maharashtra within it.
