He has replaced senior advocate APS Deol who has submitted his resignation from the post after objections by the PPCC President Navjot Sidhu in his appointment.
Patwalia is a famous lawyer from the Punjab High Court and Haryana in constitutional matters and services.
Formal notifications regarding the appointment of Patwalia were issued by the state on Friday night.
