Guwahati: Head of Assam Minister Himanta Buswa Sarma has been directed to divert traffic from the National Highway around Kaziranga National Park because hundreds of animals living in the park have begun to run away for the highlands after the swelling of the Brahmaputra River which flooded almost 70 percent of the park area.
According to the park authority, so far four animals died of sinking.
Every year, a large number of animals are killed while crossing a national highway that is busy to the highlands outside the park.
On Monday, the traffic on the highway was stopped to make a large elephant herd.
The head of the minister directed Dg Police Assam to drive traffic.
Sarma tweeted, ‘urgent appeal: we are all proud of Kaziranga National Park.
After the flood that caused the transfer of Kaziranga animals & put them at risk, may I beg for other trucks / vehicles to avoid NH 715 for travel between Assam Bottom & above & using NH 15 through the North Bank instead? “
