Guwahati: In a solidarity show, Congress on Monday appealed to employees from the closed Hindustan Paper (HPC) Corporation, who was asked to empty their residence last week, don’t leave.
The party urges the state government to come up with aid packages for workers, especially because of the applicable pandemics.
Two paper mills have died for years and notice to empty the residence has triggered massive anxiety.
Two Paper Paper HPC, Nagaon Paper Mill in Jagiroad in the Morigaon District and Cachgram Paper Factory in Panchgram in Hailakandi District, was stopped in March 2017 and October 2015.
“The Assam Pradesh (APCC) Congress Committee will stand and protect the interests of employees from a closed paper plant.
APCC considers the direction of the liquidator, Kuldeep Varma, to employees to empty their housing quarters within 15 ridiculous days, it doesn’t make sense and for no love, “MP congress from Nagaon, Pradyut Bordoloi, said at a press conference on Monday.
APCC has demanded that the state government show solidarity for employees and advance with aid packages by fulfilling all their past commitments about the resurrection of a closed factory and payment of all contributions.
“The commandment to empty the housing quarter without financial guarantees, especially during the economic pressure faced because of a pandemic, completely inhumane,” Bordoloi said.
“The government has maintained a HPC paper plant under the lock and is now willing to liquidate them.
It is suspected that the reason behind the liquidation can because this industry requires bamboo and the Government Assam wants to provide access to the interests of bamboo to make products such as ethanol which has demand and high value, “Said the Chairperson of the PCC State Media Department, Bobbeeta Sharma.
“Likewise, the Assam government must be clear about its establishment of oil wells in Panchgram.
APCC argues that no government assets must be submitted to the private sector on plates and demand such transparency,” he added.
President Assam PCC Bhupen Kumar Borah has formed the Redressal Committee of employees on September 4 to look into this issue under the leadership of Bordoloi and Deputy Chair of the President of Kamalakhsya Dey Purksyastha and Jakir Hussain Sikdar.
On Sunday, committee members visited Jagiroad and had interactions with representatives of Nagaon paper factory employees.
“The Committee records various long-term problems from employees and failures of the government to respect their recurring commitment to revive the tragic industrial and 93 deaths of employees because of non-payment of salaries in the past 58 months,” read the congress statement.
