Guwahati: Congress Mla Sherman Ali Ahmed has proposed in the Assembly that contraception is sent to every woman, especially in the lower Assam region, to control the country’s population.
Ahmed also urged the house to consider an increase in the age of a girl’s marriage for up to 20 years, by cleaning up the 12th grade test into a minimum qualification for marriage.
Delayed marriage, he felt, could help in the control of the population in the lower Assam Regency.
In his reply, the chairman of Himanta Minister Buswa Sarma told the house that the government planned to prepare the power of workers on the lines of workers asha only to distribute contraception.
He revealed the government’s plan to launch population forces consisting of 1,000 Muslim youths from Char Chapori or river areas inhabited by the minority community.
“Our plan is to send 10,000 women to minority villages as an additional Asha worker.
The only job is to make contraception available there,” Informed Sarma.
He said the project details would be published after three to four months.
Sarma also informed that increasing the age problems of marriage are being considered.
He said in the context of Assam, the efforts to control the population of the state government were not anti-Muslim but anti-poverty.
“The increase in the Muslim population will automatically fall after 20-40 years.
We just want to speed up the process,” Sarma said.
Previously, Ahmed urged the minister’s head to ask DCS and SPS, especially in Assam District which was lower under the minority, becoming more stringent in dealing with underage marriages.
“DC and SP must be suspended, if there are girls under 18 years of marriage in a district like Barpeta,” Ahmed said during a discussion about population control steps.
Baghbar’s legislator said that many women in areas inhabited by a minority, including Asha and Anganwadi workers, were not aware of the use of contraception.
“They are hesitant to ask for contraception at a pharmacy where men are usually behind the counter,” Ahmed said.
“If possible, the age of marriage must be increased to 20.
If we can make a higher secondary examination of the minimum qualification for a girl to get married, Assam will witness changes in the next 10 years,” he added.
Comparing population growth for 10 years since 2001, said CM, against the birth of 10 Hindus, the appropriate number for Muslims is 29.
“As a result of slow population growth, Hindu lifestyles in Assam have increased.
They have been able to buy vehicles, Their children have become doctors and go abroad to work, “he said.
Sarma said because of coercion, Muslims had begun to explore forest land.
He said land assessment of the minority area was needed more than a survey to assess future dangers.
Sarma emphasized that Congress, BJP and AIUD were no different on the need to adopt population control measures.
“We need a realistic solution for population control,” he added.
