Guwahati: Inadequate CCTV surveillance has caused an increase in crime such as a daybuber in Guwahati.
The city, has a population of around 13 lakh, has nearly 200 CCTV cameras that are 50% not functioning.
In 2019, Police Assam and Guwahati Smart City Limited (GSCL) have taken a project called “City Supervision Project” to install a total of 4,000 CCTV cameras throughout the city.
The project fee is Rs 2,296 Crore.
Without quoting reasons, GSCL Managing Director Ghanshyam Dass told TI that the project was dropped.
“The police department keeps the problem of CCTV supervision in the city,” he said.
Meanwhile, the police source said there were several CCTV cameras in a prominent city location.
“The current function of CCTV cameras is not enough in the city that has a large population,” added the source.
