Guwahati: The Indian Air Force on Friday joined the NDRF and Srif rescue from the sky to find two passengers who were missing from the State Boat which sank in Brahmaputra on Wednesday near the Neematighat in Jorhat after colliding with a larger ship.
Rescuers searched downstream about 60 km from the site after a fisherman found a bag of one of the missing people – Indreswar Borah – a teacher from Lakhimpur.
The bag contained several documents, including his wife’s aadhar card, but there were no signs of him or other missing people – Dr.
Bikramjit Barua from Jorhat, which was posted in Majuli.
One female passenger, Parimita Das, died on the day of the occurrence of 89 other passengers from the ship had been saved and traced to live until Friday.
A official said that the NDRF search team used a deep diver and sonar system in suspected places but there were no casualties or bicycles, which were on board, can be traced.
Union Minister Sarbanou Sonowal, who represented the Majuli constituency when he was the main minister from 2016 to 2021, arrived in Majuli on Friday.
He said both the center and state government were committed to completing the bridge that connected Majuli with Jorhat within four years.
“We all want bridges in Brahmaputra and state and central governments have taken the steps needed in this direction so that it is well built with the latest technology,” Sonowal said.
He also said that central and state agents would work together to dredge the Brahmaputra so that Roman ships could travel between Majuli and Jorhat in the winter.
He directed officials to strictly adhere to safety norms for passengers traveling with ferries and ships and urged them to accelerate the operation to find two people, who were lost after the accident.
Sonowal visited Dr.
Bikramjit’s family recently at their residence in Jorhat and convinced them all support.
He then met the injured people being treated at Jorhat Medical College and the hospital and asked about their health.
