Guwahati: With a particular opposition congress won one of the two chairs of Rajya Sabha from Assam, the election that is likely to be held in March, the former Union leader and the Tea community leader from above Assam Paban Singh Ghatowar has emerged as a competitor for a party.
Ghatowar is President Assam Chah Mazdoor Sangha, the biggest tea trade union in the state, affiliated with the National Trade National Trade Union Congress.
It has played a big role in mobilizing the sound of tea garden for Congress for decades.
The person in the State Congress unit said the representation of Ghatowar in the Upper House will fill the emptiness in the party, which did not have MP from Assam Tea tribes – determinants in the election of the country.
“There were no representatives of Tea Garden from Congress in Lok Sabha or the State Assembly.
So, it is important to send a strong leader to the parliament of the tea belt, which was once the old party fortress,” said a source at Congress.
He added that other former MP names, Dwijen Sarma had also been deep.
However, many will depend on the meeting of the Congress legislative party, scheduled for Sunday to discuss if it will approach Badruddin Ajmal All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) to reach consensus in candidates from opposition from the opposition.
The State Congress has taken a bond with AIDF after the Valent of Assembly elections last year.
The President of the State Congress Bhupen Kumar Borah told Ti that the leader of the Senior Party Debabrata Saikia would be entrusted with the responsibility to unite the opposition to a candidate for the BJP LED alliance.
“Anti-BJP MLA has the power in the assembly to send a member of Assam to Rajya Sabha in election to two seats, which will soon fall empty because the working period of Congress MPS Ripun Bora and Ranee Narah will expire” said Borah.
Congress has 27 MLA in the State Assembly, including Sherman Ali Ahmed and Sashikanta Das who have been suspended from the party.
“The rules of suspension state that the two legislators must follow the party whip as far as elections in the election of Rajya Sabha,” Borah said.
The fate of opposition candidates will also depend on how MLA Independent Gogoi and Lone CPM Legislator ManoRanjan Talukdar will choose.
Borah said if the sound of MLA Anti-BJP remains intact, they have two surplus sounds, even after ensuring the victory of one candidate.
AIUDF spokesman Aminul Islam said they were willing to unite MLA opposition, but Rued that Congress had not played a proactive role in this matter.
AIUDF has 15 MLA, the second highest in the State Assembly.
“Except for all secular and minded parties such as installing a shared battle, it is impossible to fight BJP in the election of the upcoming Rajya Sabha.
The position of the congress is not stable because MLA leaves a party one after another.
That’s the biggest concern,” Islam said.
He added that no AIUDF MLA will join BJP or Cross Vote.
