Guwahati: The Assam Cabinet on Wednesday decided not to demand Gorka residents under the 1955 citizenship law and to withdraw all delayed prosecutions relating to Gorkhas from foreign trials.
The cabinet decision, which will touch the life of the population of Lakh Gorkha State of State, has arrived a few weeks after the State ordered the inclusion of Gorkha along with the other four customary communities – Ahoms, Moran, Motox and Chutia as “class of people protected as” “in tribal belts Sadiya in the state.

The Assam cabinet decision had come almost three years after the Foreign Division of the Ministry of Home Union clarified that members of the Gorkha community, fulfilling one of the conditions stipulated in Article 5 of the Constitution, will be considered an Indian citizen, and not referred to as a foreign court.
The names of several thousand Gorkha who live in the state have also been excluded from the national list renewed by residents (NRC) while a large number of community members have been marked as “doubtful or D voter” by the Election Commission.
