Guwahati: A 24-year-old Tezpur University student was arrested on Wednesday for allegedly raping fellow batchmates of women on campus.
The university authority has confirmed that they have received complaints of “sexual harassment” and have ordered an investigation into this issue.
However, the young man claimed that he was “innocent and framed”, police said.
The case below section 376 (rape) IPC was registered at the Tezpur police station on Tuesday.
The defendant was produced in front of the court in the Sonitpur district, which sent him to a 14-day trial detention on Thursday.
“The court found the case of the Prima Facie against him and sent him to the detention of the tune,” said Sonitpur Sp Dhananjay P Ghanawat to Ti.
Quoting FIR, the police said the alleged incident of “sexual attack and abuse” took place on October 13, 15 and 16.
Registrar University of Tezpur Biren Das told Toi, “We have received complaints and internal complaints committees ordered it.” (The identity of the victim has not been disclosed to protect his privacy in accordance with the direction of the Supreme Court about cases related to sexual violence)
