Guwahati: Sashatra Sealac Bal (SSB) and Police Assam damaged the human trafficking racket and saved 22 people, which included a 4-year player, from Rangia train station on Monday.
Police arrested one Boro Sanjib on charges of human trafficking.
Speaking to the media, an SSB official said, “We have input that men and women from various villages in the Beacan District along the Indo-Bhutan border were taken to the Rangia train station to send them to Gujarat with the pretext of offering their work.
We pursue them from The border and finally saved 22 of the train platform with the help of government train police.
“A total of 144 people, most women and children have been saved by Assam police since June 24.
Of the 144, nine rescued from Kerala on July 16 and 93 was saved by police from various places Assam when they were taken to different western coast states.
The remaining 42, including 40 was an underage child, saved by the police from Sikkim on July 21.
“The incident of human trafficking since June has revealed that traders packed victims to West Coast countries – Gujarat, Maharashtra, and Kerala – with the pretext of giving them jobs.
In some incidents, it was revealed that the youth was promised work at the fishing packaging plant , “said a senior police officer.
The officer said poverty and lack of education were the two main reasons which were prey to these people to become trade.
“Moreover, people’s income has shrunk drastically because the pandemic situation and human traders take advantage of this situation.
However, the police department has thwarted some of their efforts,” the officer said.
