BENGALURU: With 315 trees being felled for Langford underground station as part of Metro work on Pink Line (Dairy Circle and Nagawara), the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) has decided to plant 3,150 saplings under the compensatory plantation plan at Karahalli near Devanahalli.
In a letter to deputy conservator of forests (tree officer), urban division, forest department, the BMRCL stated: “BSF has said it has an area to plant around 6,500 saplings.
BMRCL plans to plant 3,150 saplings on the BSF campus, Karahalli…” BMRCL officials said they have submitted a plan to the high court for compensatory plantation in the 1:10 ratio.
The corporation will engage experts from horticulture/plantation agencies for implementing the compensatory plantation plan, including three years’ comprehensive maintenance.
An agreement will be entered into with an approved agency.
Plantation work will be taken up within army land, well protected with boundary walls, before the rainy season (June 2021).
While activists and environmentalists have been demanding BMRCL plant trees within the city limits, the agency has cited shortage of land.
