Unaware Major Roads Department takes up asphalting Maruthi Nagar Main Road second time in 18 months, indicates lack of communication within BBMP
The insensible asphalting of the roads in the City is a clear indication that there is no coordination between the departments of Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP).
The problem seems to be a lack of awareness or interest among the engineers to know what other departments are up to or planning to do regarding the maintenance of the roads.
An Assistant Engineer in charge of BTM Layout took up asphalting Maruthi Nagar Main Road, 18 months ago.
As per norms, road asphalting work should be taken up only once in every three years.
However, the BBMP Major Roads Department took up the task to asphalt the same road, again, only a few days ago.

Residents and civic activists have expressed their concern after seeing that the road was being asphalted again, within only one and half years.
They are of the opinion that BBMP engineers need to focus on the roads that are full of potholes and craters instead of wasting the tax-payers’ money on asphalting perfectly good roads.
“I am surprised to see this road being asphalted so soon.
It is in a good condition and there is no need for asphalting again,’’ said VR Marathe, President of Lanchamukta Karnataka Nirman Vedike.
He claimed that he had already informed the BBMP engineers and the Joint Commissioner for BBMP South about the overlapping of asphalting work.
“They promised to take action against those responsible for asphalting the road twice within one and half years.
I have no faith in the authorities who assured me though,’’ Marathe said.
Meanwhile, Savithri Hakki, Executive Engineer, BBMP Major Roads, said that the ward engineer who had asphalted the road 18 months ago was not supposed to do so as it comes under the Major Roads Department.
“I was not informed when the road was asphalted by a contractor assigned by the ward engineer.
I will submit a report to the higher authorities, regarding this, and issue a notice to the ward engineer,’’ said Hakki.
However, when asked why she took up the asphalting work without inspecting the condition of the road Hakki had no answer.
Veerabhadra Swamy, Joint Commissioner, BBMP South, said that he will look into the matter.
“I am unaware that the road was asphalted twice within a period of 18 months.
I will ask the ward engineer and the executive engineer of the Major Roads Department to give me an explanation regarding this issue,’’ said Swamy.
Ramalinga Reddy, MLA of BTM Layout, assured that measures will be taken to avoid wasting tax-payers’ money.
“Money will not be paid to the contractor for asphalting the road without permission,’’ said Reddy.
